CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY
The presentation is within the classical exhibition format – a massive survey that most artists are doing in mid career. These are surveys of accomplishments, summing up and testing new development vectors usually documented in an impressive publication. However, as it is usually with Ivan Moudov the traditional things in this project are inseparable from the doubt and the irony for the specific tradition. On the face of it the artist is offering all that is expected of him – a display of the results of his work; a publication which is covering his oeuvre; the possibility to buy works. On top he is offering the not-yet obligatory but, according to the market lore, ever more present extra – a certificate of authenticity which is the proof that each work is unique and he is the author.
Indeed the certificate is the key to the interpretation of some self-evident rules and notions that is on offer by Moudov – this is a test of the framework for understanding of what art is; we are made to widen our notions for what art is.
The exhibition is showcasing the full oeuvre of Ivan Moudov until now in the form of an exhibited catalogue. Each one of the pages from the catalogue, which contain reproductions of his works as well as texts by various writers, is exhibited as a single item with the purpose of being sold at affordable price. By buying a page the new owner is actually approving the inclusion of that page in the printed catalogue and thus is becoming its editor. The names of the owners of pages who have become owners of a page as an artwork will be mentioned in the credits for the catalogue except for those who want to remain anonymous.
In addition the buyer of an individual page becomes the owner of all the periods at the end of the sentences printed on the same page. These are hand-made by the artist and are a direct manual intervention of the author within the page.
The printed version of the catalogue meant for distribution will not contain periods.
The catalogue will be published in the beginning of 2016 and the unsold pages will not be included. The exhibition in the Institute of Contemporary Art-Sofia is the last stop of the project. So far it has been presented in Tobacna 001 CC, Ljubljana; Kunstverein, Milan; Transit-display, Prague; Artists Club / Coffre Fort, Brussels; Kluckyland, Vienna
